What is the SSL Server certificate?

Why it is useful? I got a FortiGate 100A unit with me, when I was trying to enable SSL VPN on it, I was asked to choose the type of certificate from which I have chosen to enter "self-signed" . So, why or what's this Server certificate all regarding.
