Getting more social shares

I'd really like to get more social shares on my articles, any tips on how to do that?

I've tried putting the buttons in many positions, even adding a pop up when the page has been scrolled far enough but with limited success.

What have you done to get more shares?

How about providing raffle prices for those who will share or simply encourage the readers to share and spread the information? Social media buttons could be on top or bottom but it should be noticeable.

That's a good idea, I had thought about trying something similar before with the website Gleam.io - Do you suggest it or know of anything better?

I'll try to find a WordPress plugin, ideally I can avoid 3rd party apps to do this.
